Trying to explain God is like explaining the unexplainable. For God is that Being whom our reason is not bound to reach. The fact is that no matter how much we spent time contemplating God; we still would not be able to understand the mystery behind this God. What even makes it more difficult is that God could not be experienced by our senses. Since He is invisible, it makes us hard to convince ourselves and others that indeed there is a God. However, not everything that can’t be proven scientifically could immediately be considered non-existing. Think about the wind. Nobody can see the wind, but we can see the things the wind does. We can see the leaves move when the wind blows through the branches of a tree. So we believe that there is wind. Same argument with God, we do not see God but we see the marvels that God has done, so we believe that there really is a God. I may not be a religious person who shows her faith by attending masses, practicing rituals and the like. But looking around the beauty of my surroundings, I know that there exists a God who created these things for me and for you. Most especially He created us with our own purpose in this life. Let me start enumerating God’s wonders from what is nearest to me.
My human body. When I look at my hands and bend my fingers and start picking up some things, writing my lectures, typing this reflection and lots of other stuffs. I can’t help to feel thankful to have my hands…with these hands I can do many things. Then I would tend to think, “Who made my hands?” Aside from my hands, I am thankful that He also made me mouth, nose and eyes. With my senses, I am able to appreciate fully the beauty of my surroundings. Deviating myself from my outer body and moving deeper into my body systems, we know that inside are organs and organ systems. They coordinate with each other to accomplish certain task. Isn’t it amazing?! These complex systems made up of components are interdependent on one another to function. That if one part does not function properly then the whole body crashes. Who made our body then? Did some man make them? I don’t think so. Men could build houses but men are not capable of making such a perfect machine come to life. This means…there must be a designer who created our bodies and gave life to it!
The Earth. Observing the nature around us, we observe that it is full of beauty and intricate design. The ecosystem fits together in such a careful and order way that the world is self-sustaining whole. This design in nature- its beauty with the minute details proves that there exists a creator and a genius designer whom I call God. God did not create the earth simply for nothing but formed it even to be inhabited by human beings who have meaningful relationship with Him. I found a cute poem praising God for being a designer, it goes this way: “Who put the colours in the rainbow? Who put salt into the sea? Who put the cold in the snowflakes? Who made you and me?… Who put the scent into the rose? Who taught the honeybee to dance? Who put the tree inside the acorn? It surely can’t be a chance.” This poem tells us that the existence of the earth including the nature and human beings cannot just be reduced to exist by chance. We understand that in order men to cohabitate in this world, the world that was intelligently put together to allow life to continue. There must exist someone who made everything and gave each one its own purpose for its existence.
With these signs of design of living creatures, I know that they are not just work of choice but it must be a work of design! William Paley developed the “Teleological Argument”. In his argument he cited the example of the watch and watchmaker. He said that someone walking in the countryside, who came across a watch hidden in the grass, having never seen one before, would immediately be impressed by its detailed mechanism. A watch surely is not made by chance, but instead points to the existence of an intelligent watchmaker who designed it. He even drew a parallelism between the watch and the world, and said that the intricate detail of the world pointed to the existence of an intelligent designer God who created it. Ask yourself: Who made the sun and the moon, such that we have day and night? How about the rain? Men are not capable of doing such. But when asked who made the house, everyone knows that someone must have built it. Men build it for it would be senseless to say that the house made itself! (Hebrew 3:4) However, looking at nature – flowers, sun, moon, rain and more and ask yourselves: “Who made them?” Certainly no man did! And just as the house did not make itself, so they did not make themselves too! Someone must have made it and this someone is God. Oftentimes, I spent time pondering the existence of everything around me specifically the essence of them. The sun gives light and keeps us warm. If there is no sun, everything would be cold and there would be no life on earth. If there is no moon, our bodies will worn-out because man would not give their bodies time to rest. If there is no rain, flowers and plants won’t grow…we won’t be able to see beautiful flowers, we would not be able to eat fruits and vegetables, and most especially we won’t have water! Without water, how could we remain alive? Looking around the beauty and excavating the essence of each creation around us, I know that there really is a God. Furthermore…
The universe. The existence of the universe and the design or pattern behind it makes me feel that there is a Great Designer…who I designate as God. According to science, the universe was brought about by a huge explosion. The theory was named “Big-bang Theory”. Matter moved apart after this explosion and gravity pulled them together; thus, the planets, sun and the solar system were born. Scientist may be right about this theory, but I still believe that Someone must have planned this event to happen and must have calculated how the placement of everything that is in our universe. He might even be present and had a hand on how strong the blast should be and how should gravity pull the particles together. If it were not because of His presence, how then could we explain the uniqueness of each planet from another? How come earth contains gases like oxygen, nitrogen, etc that are necessity for the existence of living creatures? The earth was ready for us even before we existed. This analogy could be compared to carpenters who built the house and the house is ready for the owners to move in. I am convinced that the existence of the universe is not merely a cosmic coincidence but it is a result of “fine-tuning”. Someone must have dedicated his time to decide on the architecture of everything and perfected it by providing the little details.
It might be that at this point in time, you are wondering if God indeed is the designer behind all these stuffs that we have. You might question as what I asked myself before, “How come there is evil and imperfections in this world?” The answer to this is simple…It is still in God’s plan to allow evil to exist to bring out the goodness masking itself behind it.
**There’s so many things to be thankful about right? Most especially the gift of life…
